About the event
Over 4 weekends we will work with the seasons to learn how to forage, prepare and work with a variety of wild materials. We will explore a range of traditional basketry techniques including looping, twining, coiling and cordage to create unique and beautiful baskets. The course will open your eyes to the craft possibilities that exist in every garden, hedgerow, riverside, bog and wasteland!
You can book on all 4 courses for a discount price, or seperately.
There is the opportunity to camp at the Centre with access to kitchen, w.c. and shower. There is a small charge of £5 per person/per night.
A simple mid-day meal will be provided each day.
Spring May14th-15th
As the sap is rising it is possible to peel bark from the tree! We will focus on this flexible and leather like material- exploring different techniques of folding and weaving to create beautiful baskets and pouches.
Summer July 9th-10th
As plants reach their peak growth and strength we can utilise their natural properties to make durable and versatile string. We will experiment with a variety of plants to extract fibres for natural cordage, which we will then loop into bags.
Autumn September 17th-18th
Grasses and leaves which have finished their growth for the year can be dried, plaited and twisted into baskets using a variety of traditional techniques which we will explore on this early Autumn weekend.
Winter November 19th-20th
When plants are dormant and the sap is low it is the perfect time to harvest vines and other woody materials. We will predominantly work with brambles and ivy to explore the versatile technique of twining. We will also explore how to make simple frame baskets- a traditional basket used in many parts of the world.
