WEAVING WITH MOSS

Join us for a day weaving moss into unique and beautiful baskets.
The day will begin with sensitively wild harvesting our materials. We will then transform the moss using the traditional basketry technique of coiled plaiting. There will also be the opportunity to learn cordage making.
Ticket price includes lunch, teas and coffees.
The course will be held at Bwlch Corog, Wales Wild Land Foundation's pioneering rewilding site. Here they are allowing native woodland habitat to restore naturally.

CORDAGE EXPLORATION

We will use a variety of plants (including moss, nettle and bramble) to explore the ancient technology of string production! In this workshop, we will cover suitable materials, harvesting, fibre extraction, drying and processing. We will also begin to look at ways to turn our string into looped bags.
The workshop is suitable for beginners age 8+. Ticket price includes lunch, teas and coffees.

WEAVING WITH BRAMBES
December 20th and 21st 2019

Everyone loves picking blackberries in the autumn, but not many people know you can also turn the bramble vines into useful and beautiful baskets all year round! Brambles are a freely available and abundant plant often seen as a weed, come learn how to see them with new eyes (don't worry, we dethorn them first!)
Friday (optional)
We will spend the day out in the woods gathering brambles and preparing them ready for Saturday. We will learn:
how and when to harvest vines
material selection
removing thorns
coiling, drying and storing
Saturday
Day 2 we will spend in the workshop. We will learn:
how to prepare dried vines
how to create a traditional basket base
twining the sides
shaping
borders
trimming off
The course will be held at Bridgend Farmhouse (https://www.bridgendfarmhouse.org.uk/), a community owned learning centre in South Edinburgh. The cafe will be open and available for teas, coffees and lunches, or you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.
Please bring warm waterproof clothes, and if you have them, thick gardening gloves and secateurs.

COILED GRASS BASKETS
September 21st- 23rd 2018
We will collect wild grasses to coil and create unique and delicate baskets.
The course will be held at Bwlch Corog, Wales Wild Land Foundation's pioneering rewilding site. Here they are allowing native woodland habitat to restore naturally. Simon Ayres from the charity will lead a walk and talk as part of the weekend.
The Saturday night will also include magical tales from local storyteller Milly Jackdaw.
The weekend will include shared accommodation in our holiday cottages. Camping is also available, or a non residential option for those living locally. Breakfast and dinner will be provided but students are asked to bring packed lunches.

WILD WEAVING IMMERSION
August 12th-19th 2018
An exciting opportunity to spend a week living wild in the Welsh hills, gathering materials from the land and learning several ancient basketry techniques including:
frame baskets
coiled grass baskets
moss plaiting
stake and strand basketsry
This is an immersion course and will involve wild camping and campcraft. Facilities will be basic and our time will be spent entirely in the beauty of the outdoors. The course will include a midweek walk with a local folklorist and storyteller.
